Background:
An endowment to the
Olentangy River Wetland Research Park in the name of Rhonda and Paul Sipp has
been established at Ohio State University to provide annual awards for students
doing research on wetland and river research. The research can be basic, e.g. wetland
biogeochemistry, riverine aquatic insect ecology, or applied, e.g. restoration,
exotic species control, water quality treatment, but it must be part of a
university research effort by a Center institution. Student applicants can be in any
phase of their research but must be able to provide a short written report of
progress one year after the award is given.
The support can be for
an existing research project or can be to initiate a new research direction
that otherwise was not possible.
The latter situation is preferred.
Competition is limited
to students whose advisors are affiliates of the Ohio Center for Wetland and
River Restoration (OCWRR). Affiliates of the center are from Ohio State
University, Shawnee State University, Wright State University, Youngstown State
University, Kenyon College, Central State University, and Ashland

Advisors from the
above institutions who are not OCWRR affiliates may ask for an invitation to be an affiliate
prior to the student application deadline.
2009 Awards and Amounts:
One undergraduate
student award - $500
One graduate student
award - $1000
Application Procedure:
Student, with some
oversight from his/her advisor, should write a 2-page proposal with the
following information:
- Applicant name, professional address
(department, university etc.), contact address, phone, e-mail
- AdvisorŐs name and address (with signature
indicating agreement to oversee the research)
- Title of research
- Project description—Students should give a
short description of their research and how the award will assist them in
this research. A statement agreeing to provide a hard copy and disk of
research progress by one year after the award should be included at the
end of this section. The research can be on wetlands and related water
resources anywhere in the world.
- Project budget (up to the amount in the
competition)—Project awards are specifically for research supplies
and/or other direct expenses related to the research. The award must not be used for
salaries, fringe benefits, or overhead.
